When trying to play dvd in KDE

I am running debian on a Dell Smartstep 200 N laptop. I am trying to use my dvd/CD-RW combo drive with my newly installed linux system. I am getting the following error message when trying to access the cd-rom device or dvd device :

/dev/cdrom : Permission Denied

any suggestions>?

Try logging out, then logging in as root. Does it work then? If it does, then as root, just give yourself access.

I am logged in as root and it still gives me the same error message.

what are the permissions on it? "ls -l /dev/cdrom"

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root /dev/cdrom ---------> hdc
