when I unplug the keyboard...

I have this dell inspiron 8100 laptop with keyboard problems. Sometimes I just plug an external keyboard and it works ok.

If I remove the external keyboard while it's working, the internal keyboard "takes over", but after a while, the mouse dies.

This is what I got from dmesg after one of its deaths:
Code:
Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1
Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1
Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1
Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1
Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1
.

Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1
Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1
Synaptics driver lost sync at byte 1

Is there a way I can recover without having to reboot?

What's your kernel?
I noticed there is some severe bugs about USB in newer ( > 2.6.7 ) kernel. I stick with 2.6.8.1 on my laptop because (among other things) USB crash on newer kernel.
