What will be the use of ATA 100/133 HD
 

Hi folks,


I have several 40G ATA 100/133 HDs which are NOT too old still running strong. The motherboards which I'm now running support SATA-II HD. Although I can still use those ATA HDs sacrisfying the speed.

How I shall use those HDs? Treating them as scrap will be a little bid waste. Suggestion would be appreciated. TIA.

Give them away to someone who can use them. There's got to be someone you know who would appreciate a bigger/better hard drive. Either a non tech friend with an old computer or a tech friend with a project in mind. I always find the karma pays off in the end when you need a particular old type of memory or graphics card.

Alternatively, get a USB housing and use them as backup devices.

I already have an USB enclosure with a 13G ATA-66 HD installed. The space is more than sufficient for storage of text documents.


I'm considering building a file server making use of old stuffs. I have old case, old IWill motherboad, old Intel PII CPU, old RAID card, 0,1 and 0+1, PC100 RAM 448MB totally, old 15" LCD display, etc.

Old hdd's
 

I'm recycling old (6/7 years) Dell & Compaq corporate hardware for use by the unemployed and elderly. Currently I have six boxes on the bench with various 700/800/900Mhz P3's, PC100/133 RAM and 15/20 Gb hdd's, a motley selection of ATI & NVidia graphics cards and some old generic NIC's with Realtek chips. I found enough old DIMMS to put at least 256Mb in each, and they are all working nicely with Ubuntu 6.06. For a non-technical user who needs basic wordprocessing, e-mail and simple surfing they are ideal. Some will get USB WiFi adaptors, as we have a growing wireless-mesh network broadband to provide free broadband to council tenants in my borough of London.

The big problem I have is some newer (2/4 years) Dell desktops which seem to have a strange BIOS which doesn't like Linux. Still investigating that. A live Ubuntu 6.06 CD runs OK, but only at 640x480.

Star a linux user group and star distributing these boxes t o low income families.
