Question What type of harddrive should I buy?

I won't be getting it for about 3 months mind if that changes anything. I'm going to build a computer for when I go to university so I don't want it to be too expensive. 80GB will probably be plenty so I don't need a huge drive. Oh and if there are any other types I've missed out just post 'em.

Do NOT get a Maxtor. They reduced their warranty to merely 1 year for a reason--too much lost profits in warranty replacements.

IsaacKuo, you should not post incorrect information...

From Maxtor's website:
Quote:
The following Standard Warranty Period will apply to Maxtor products purchased by distributors from Maxtor on or after September 12, 2004:

* Maxtor Fireball®, DiamondMax® ATA/SATA and DiamondMax Plus ATA /SATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3 years.
* Maxtor MaXLine™ ATA/SATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.
* Maxtor Atlas® SCSI drives will continue to carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.
* Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year.
* Maxtor external hard drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year, with the exception of the Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LS and PS3100 drives, which have a Standard Warranty Period of 90 days in North America.
* In EMEA, Maxtor external hard drives and Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits returned for service to an authorized Maxtor RMA service facility in EMEA, will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 2 years.
* In India, Maxtor internal (non-retail) PC and server hard drives that have been shipped to an authorized Maxtor distributor in India on or after January 1, 2005 and returned for service to a Maxtor RMA service facility in India, will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.

Limited Warranties apply to the geographies in which originally sold by a Maxtor authorized channel reseller. The Standard Warranty Period may be subject to variations imposed by local law or regulations. Note: If you purchased retail packaged product this warranty does not apply. Please go to Retail Packaged Products information.

Retail-Packaged Products Warranty Periods

STANDARD WARRANTY PERIODS

North America

Europe, Middle East, Africa

Other Geographies
ATA Hard Drive Kits 1 year 2 years 1 year
SCSI Hard Drive Kits 5 years N/A N/A
External Hard drives 1 year* 2 years 1 year

*Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LS has a 90-day warranty in North America

Limited warranties apply to the geographies in which originally sold by a Maxtor authorized channel reseller. The Standard Warranty Period may be subject to variations imposed by local law or regulations.
APB_4,

Always double-check any information you're given in a public
forum. As you see, there are no checks and balances in place
to stop someone from posting totally incorrect information...

All hard drive manufacturers reduced warranties in 2003, but
there are still long-term warranties available. Just check with
the drive manufacturer and the seller before purchasing.

Umm...from your own quote:

* Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year.

THAT is what applies to all the cheap crap Maxtors which people buy at retail stores because the price looked so good.

If you want to buy a Maxtor because it's cheap, then go right ahead...don't complain that you weren't warned...
