what to do about slowness/choppy cheese with vx-3000 lifecam, webcam?

i just installed fedora 11 on an ibm thinkcentre. (A50p, 8194)

512 mb ram.
pentium 4 2.6 ghz.
80 gb harddrive
kernel 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i586
gnome 2.26.3

i have a microsoft lifecam vx-3000. plug it into machine. cheese works with it but very slow. and no audio.
this is what it looks like from the screen as recorded by my phone->

and this is 2 movies as recorded by cheese:
http://youtube.com/macprbroadcaster
very choppy, super low frame rate or frozen, and no audio.

any ideas on what i should try?
different webcam? (want to get audio as well from webcam if possible)
more ram?
reinstall another distribution?
some other low level configuration of /dev/video0?

thanks,
dan

okay, so i just found this page of webcams for skype
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/SkypeWebCams

which has this to say about the microsoft lifecam vx-3000

Quote:
The camera works, but the picture has abnormal colours and Skype eats 100% CPU during the video call. Skype also may hang during or after the call. The built-in microphone doesn't work, although it is seen by ALSA.
this sounds exactly like the behavior i am experiencing.

so i will look into a different camera and update this afterwards.

the question that also remains is whether or not 512Mb ram is enough. anybody have any experience on that? seems like it should be plenty as the movies are rather small but i'm not sure how much is used just by the OS and gnome.

thanks,
dan

ok. so i have a different camera now. the microsoft lifecam show. it works better and audio is there but the response is still super sluggish in the viewer and the videos themselves are still rather choppy.

what i see on the screen, which is worse than the actual videos themselves:

a recorded video

so, a different camera? more ram? still searching for some advice on this issue if anybody has any.

for a try, i did install ubuntu on the machine but it failed to boot after install and then i reinstalled fedora 11 and this is where i am now.
