What modems are compatible with Linux?

I just purchased an older Compaq Deskpro ep/sp series and partitioned it with Windows 2000 and Puppy Linux 3.1.It has an ethernet card. I wish to put in a modem but am not sure what modem is compatible with it.neither is the man who is going to put in the modem. Is there a list somewhere or some gide lines we should use?I was thinking ,this being a newer version, any modem would work. Please help.
I also have an intel dial up card. Is that ok to put in?

I have found external serial modems the easiest. Have a look at the HCL here
