What is the status of TFT monitors in Linux?

I'm shopping for a TFT monitor, and I'm concerned what kind of resistance I will encounter when I boot up my computer after plugging in the flat bastard.

A friend complained that RH9 simply would not install, not even in text mode. I'm currently using Fedora core, and since it's basically redhat I might be in for a world of hurt, yes?

What should I keep in mind?
What to do if I get no picture in X or in console?

Post your own experiences, be them stories of success or bitter failure.

They work fine. I installed Red Hat 9 on my Gateway 600S laptop; it has a 15" XGA Sharp flatpanel. The installer detected a HorizSync of 31.5-48.5 and a VertRefresh of 50.0-70.0, and it runs at 1024x768 at 32bit color depth just fine (it's connected to a Mobility Radeon 7500 (M7)).
