What is the most appropriate graphics card for linux's 3D hardware exceleration?
 

Hey,

Okay. I know it's possible to get any graphics card working under any distro. But, I would like some good recommendations for a graphics cards that support 3D hardware exceleration. Meaning... Which graphics cards work best for gaming under linux and are nice for OpenGL (...and have many drivers for them...etc)? Although there are very expensive graphics cards, I am kind of leaning on the cheaper side (128 bit maybe?).

Any recommendations and successful experiences with them would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I'd get a nVidia card, then install the drivers fron nVidia's website. OpenGL frame rates with these cards on Linux are generally slightly better than the rates on Windows too.

I've got a GeForce FX 5200 (128MB), and I can play UT2004 with no problems at all on Linux.

I have a ATI RADEON 7000VE, and have no problems with it at all. From Mandrake 8.1 through what I am currently running Mandrake10.0. I have 3D acceleration without having to go get extra drivers for it. Works better than it did, in Windows, before I finally kicked Windows. There are other people that I know that have the 9600 All-in-Wonder, and the 9800 All-in-Wonder Pro. And I have not heard of them having any problems with their cards. So take your pick. The person with the 9800 AIW Pro uses SUSE 9.1
