What is the best cpu my mobo supports?
 

Hi, I have an Irvine-GL6E micro small form factor motherboard with a pentium dual core 2.5ghz e5200 processor. What is the best/fastest processor I can get for this motherboard? It has a 775 socket. Does that mean I can use any socket 775 cpu? Or only specific ones? Here is a link.

According to that link, the fastest CPU you can get is a Core 2 Duo E8700 (super rare, techncially unreleased). Aside from that, the E8600.

I woudnt bother, its not worth it. TheE8600 is faster than the E5200, but the E8600 is hardly new and isnt that fast compared to newer CPUs. You'll be looking at minimum $50 plus shipping, maybe a new heatsink, which is getting into 'save a few more $$$ and buy something newer and much faster' territory.

According to that link yes. But that doesn't make sense to me because a quad core option was available when this computer was first purchased according to this other link. And it doesn't show a different mobo as an option.

socket 775 had quads..but you need to do a CBA to decide if it's really worth it

Indeed it has, but that does not mean that any 775 mainboard will run with quad-core CPUs (and if it does that it will run with 45nm quad-core CPUs).

So according to the hp website the q9300 quad core was available as an option for my pc which implies that it will work. Will this processor work on my mobo or not? It scores a 3189 on passmark and my current e5200 pentium dual core scores a 1484.

Will it fit and is it worth the $50 or so? I plan on keeping this computer around for quite awhile.

Or what about the q6700??? It is a 65nm and is quad core.

Maybe you should try to contact HP support with this question. If they offered such a setup it is likely that it will work, but only they (or a trial run) can tell.
