What is the best & easiest to set up webcam under linux?

I have used a Phillips camera under windows, never got it to work under linux. However it for some reason has decided to return a black image under windows so I'm looking for a new cam.

I predominantly use:
Debian [testing]
Ubuntu [dapper] (I'm warming to it more and more)
Windows [XP +SP2](Where I work is all windows based so i have to be compatible and since i don't own a copy of windows I'm using works])

But I like to try other distros when a whim (and time) let me.

What cam is the easiest to set up and gives good results under linux? so far I haven't seen anything that leaps out at me.

Money isn't particularly an object however I don't want to spend too much.

I have read about firewire and other things but I'm skeptical at the moment as I'm used to a nice easy plug and play USB cam that can be used on both my desktop and laptop or any other machine (in theory).

Let me have your stories. Success and falieure.

It's an interesting application although my main interest is so that my mum can see (and possibly hear) me when i'm talking to her.

I'm more interested in a webcamera compatability list similar to this list of supported digital cameras.

I use these drivers for my Logitech Quickcam 4000. I use Camsource to serve up images. They seem to work fairly well.
