What happened to my system bell?

I miss that annoying beep.

This is a ThinkPad R51; sound is otherwise working fine alsa/alsa-mixer xine, amarok, totem, system alerts, startup shutdown events etc etc etc

But in the terminals (in x - metacity/gnome or fvwm) no beep or bell in terminal or in a textonly terminal either...

Code:
wparker@geko /mnt $ cat /etc/inputrc
# /etc/inputrc: initialization file for readline
#
# For more information on how this file works, please see the
# INITIALIZATION FILE section of the readline(3) man page
#

# do not bell on tab-completion
#set bell-style none
Don't know what else would be causing it - the thinkpad beeps happily on stattup BIOS low battery etc so it can't be a faulty speaker...

Any ideas guys?

TIA

Will

Is "PC Speaker" compiled as built-in, as a module, or you did not select it to be compiled.

Correct! Thanks - I had no idea it was burried down in the Device Drivers Input devices Misc Devices PC Speaker

I will build as soon as practical and trust that this will enable the bell!

Thanks heaps for that!
