What Happened to Freeing up my Memory/Resources?

Ok. I found the GNOME system monitor thingy yesterday and opened it up. WOW i thought - of my 320 mb RAM, 286 MB was being used up! I thought to myself, "WOW Windows uses less than that". I looked at what I had running - nothing i told it to. So what the heck is all that stuff it runs on it's own that wastes my memory and resources? Anyway to stop it and make it run good? It hasn't been working up to par, but never had. Their is no reason why I should have only 40 megs of ram free running linux of all operating systems. Any help out there?

Mandrake does start alot of stuff you do not need. And some of your ram is used by the kernel as cache which helps speed up the whole thing.
