What distro is best for this machine?

I have an old machine an AMD 800Mhz, 896 MB RAM, 15GB HDD, 128MB ATI video card where I want to put a Linux distro. I tried Ubuntu 8.10 and it makes the machine too slow.
Which distro did you recommend me ?

Thank you,
Catalin

I have Debian on a similar machine. But I did a base install, then only installed the packages that I wanted (aptitude install xdm xorg kde-core). Then I installed packages as I wanted or needed them. My KDE desktop only uses 55MB of RAM...

On another less powerful system I run Puppy Linux. But it's much less powerful with only 128MB RAM. So Puppy would probably fly on your machine.

you can try: Slackware 12.1, Fedora 9(with some options), Linux From Scratch and Beyond Linux From Scratch(takes a while but provides a NICE system at the end) or Gentoo.
