what 56k modems work with linux?
I've had enough of trying to find the software necessary for my modem to work with Linux, and its become a ridiculous ordeal. I'm wondering what modems work 100% with linux--just simple 56k modems. I know this would be the best place to ask this because I'm sure other community members have experienced the same headache.

Usually, any serial 56k modem works. Internal modems can be a pain.

All hardware serial modems, some usb modems and Intel 536ep chipset based (internal softmodems),
Intel 536ep modems work fine with 2.4.26 and 2.6.7 vanilla kernels. Newer kernels do not allow some kind of modules operations such proprietary modules loading and compiling.
Drivers for Intel modems are availible for free on Intel website.
Serial modems do not require drivers, just some configurations.
Usb modems can cause an awful headache.
