what's included in the AC97 sound card support?

Automatic wrapper installation or sound properly done through the sound server (like is the sound server on and configured automatically and does it support multiple programs using sound at once)?

Thanks for the help!

This may get a better response if moved into the Hardware forum?

The Arts KDE server may be enabled via the KDE control center.

It utilizes Alsa drivers, and supports input from multiple sources in software.

Most AC97 devices cannot handle this as they are akin to Winmodems, in that they are fairly dumb devices.

In turn if your applications are set to use Arts, they can share output streams...

Meaning you can hear the beeps and boops while you are playing something via XMMS, Mplayer or Xine.

While AC97 itself is not great, the Linux drivers do work very well.

It is also possible to configure timidity as a service to act as a process that intercepts all attempts by Alsa/Arts to output to a midi device, even when the software does not support redirection.

This means that Midi and Audio playback through AC97 is possible, even though AC97 has NO provision for Midi.

nope cause it was a question if it worked in mandrake but well. I wanted to test something in mandrake and I saw AC97 support so I thought I'd ask if it supported it this way that it's completely automatically setup. However I found the problem and solved it in debian so no need for mandrake anymore. But I guess I have to say that I'm asking for mandrake software only and not for hardware support (still I thought I said that) cause otherwise it will be moved? I nowhere saw a hardware question but well...

Thanks opjose the first thing was exaclty what I wanted to know, if I had to set the arts server up myself or not. Cause I can't get it to work in any distro so far nor do I care to really dive deep in it since I don't like kde.

Well no offense caused, but your post had been around for some time and it only seems to be a recent phenomenon that opjose is answering threads in the Mandrake forum. Your original post did not seem to correspond to what you just put above, but I understand now what you were asking.

Well since I put it in the mandrake forum I suspected I didn't have to put in that I wanted it to know about mandrake and sound server is software too. But well I got the answer and that's what it's about.

Also thank you for being helpful in finding another place where I could get my answer and sorry for the misunderstanding
