have attached the drive and see it in dmesg output:

What now? I think I'm supposed to get a device assigned to and then mount the device. Help is greatly appreciated.

skunkburner's post was mostly correct. You will probably have to load the usb-storage module also. modprobe usb-storage

Ok, I have a similar problem. I've seen the other post that was linked to and did a modprobe usb-storage and dmesg says that USB Mass Storage is initialized, but gives no sda number for the specific drive (*Maxtor One-Touch). It found both USB hubs, so the USB service is working, but I don't know where to go from here. I'm on Knoppix 3.7. Any help would be appreciated.
