Question weird sound problem

Hi there, I have a Red Hat 9 linux and I am trying to configure the soundcard. My soundcard is an Intel AC97 which was not supported by this version according to sndconfig, so I downloaded the drivers from Intel's site and configured it. Then I rebooted and now I hear perfect sound using my headphones, however I can not hear anything from the speakers... I opened the volume control and all controls are enabled... any idea?

Thx
Claudio

Can you confirm that the problem lies within the OS and not the speakers? If you have a dual boot, do the speakers work fine under Windows? Did you double check cables connections?

If you hear perfect sound using headphones, that leads me to believe that it is a hardware issue involving the speaker jack on your soundboard.

That's a good suggestion, I'd just like to add that it may be a mixer channel problem.
good luck.

Yes, I have a dual boot, and the internal speakers work very well Windows XP

How can I check whether it is a mixer channel problem?

I am using KDE, I open the Control Center, and test the system bell, and not even that comes out of the speaker. I open Kmix and made sure nothing was muted, and that volume was high in all channels...

Try alsamixer from a terminal. Check all your channels, for some cards you actually have to mute some channels for others to work.
good luck.
