weird problem with ATI card and glxgears/fgl_glxgears

okay, i realise there are /similar/ threads on linuxquestions, but i have not managed to find any quite the same, and everyone i have chatted to over the net finds this problem particularly odd...

as can be determined from the subject of this post, i am having troubles with trying to get an ATI card working under linux.

the x-server appears to load without any problems.
fglrxinfo outputs:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600SE Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3 (X4.3.0-3.9.0)

glxinfo claims:
direct rendering enabled: yes

kernel agpgart module loads fine with via-agp module (using kernel 2.6.4)

same results are attained whether using kernel agp module or fglrx internal module.

okay, so basically it looks as though everything should work, right?
well, unfortunately, everything doesn't work.

if i try to run glxgears or fgl_glxgears, the system crashes. the mouse pointer can still be moved, but NOTHING else functions, to such an extent in fact that i can't even make the computer reboot via ssh.
what is really quite strange is i have had the ATI card in question running just fine on my computer (the computer currently under scrutiny belongs to my fiance).

we have virtually the same motherboard. mine is a kx600 pro, and hers is a kx600s pro. both have the kt600 agp chipset which, as far as i know, is very relevant to this matter.

her exact specs are:

cpu - AMD Athlon XP 2000+
ram - 256MB ddr
mobo - kx600s pro
dist - debian
ver - unstable
xver -
ATI[driver]ver - 3.9.0

we are dying to get this matter resolved (have been working on it for about 3 weeks), so any assistance would be hugely appreciated

just an idea, but...if the debian you use is unstable (in the specs - ver: unstable), could that be it? don't know really. have you tried with a stable one?

well, heh, that's a pretty funny idea. unfortunately it's so far off the mark that... well, i'm not going to be mean about it. it just looks as though you know about as much about Debian as i know about RedHat

i have actually managed to fix the problem. it turns out it was her mobo which was causing the problem. we have since swapped mobo's and, for the time being, both systems seem to be working fine . it would seem that the KX600S-Pro is a buggy board, so a word of advice to fellow computer builders: steer clear of that one. mind you the KX600-Pro seems pretty stable.

anyway, i have not yet got her sound working (on either board actually), so i should probably get searching linuxquestion for some ideas on how to fix that one

daemonTED is scared of updating the bios. he ruined a perfectly good mobo about 6 months ago doing just that, and he had followed the instructions to the letter
