Weird hard drive error messages:
This is a relatively new hard drive (about 3 months), and now it spontaneously mounts itself read only, spews out DMA errors, and gives I/O errors. When it does work it is very sluggish. I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I don't know if this is a hard-ware problem, a software problem, or even where the problem is. Any help you can offer will be appreciated. Its a Maxtor 7Y250P0 250 GB.

i would have to say it sounds like a defective hard drive. Id return it for a different one and see if that doesnt solve your problems

Okay, i would have thought that too, except it wasn't only like this (it waited until about the week after the 90 day warranty expired.). I have some other hard drives I can swap it with and see if the problems occur with it as well.

do that, its possible its the hard disk controller, but the problems youre experiencing are very unlikely to be software related (if youre doing everthing right). Its still pretty likely your hardware went bad somehow, be it factory defect, random bad luck, or countless other scenarios

I was afraid of that. Why do these things happen AFTER the warranty expires? Thanks for the info.

Maxtor is a bad brand when it comes to hard drives because they have problems with melting down and such, so it's not too surprising to hear about someone having a problem with a Maxtor really. :(
