Webcam is too dark!

Hi there , my webcam has been driving me up the wall when trying to get it to work properly in linux, its birghtness works perfectly fine in windows (moan) but in linux, it only seems to work with the spca5xx drivers. I'd have no problem with this except that the image is VERY dark , i have turned the birghtness up to full 255 via the paramters in modprobe spca5xx aswell as trying to do it in gqcam. For some reason gqcam seems to want to load every time with autobrightness on (even though i've specifies it to off at the command prompt!). Is there any way of overriding the driver some how and making the image brighter than 255 as i know it can look brighter in windows? or do I have to resort to putting it through some kind of brightness filter?

i've also tried many other drivers including

qc-usb
qc-usb-messenger (though i dont know if i need to load it other than modprobe quickcam)
sn9c102

None seem to work for my camera and i was wondering if anyone has the same camera with a success story to tell me how to configure it in gentoo/linux?

Thanks in advance.

You forgot to post the type of camera you have. Also post output from lsusb with camera turned on.

Ooops, sorry, I have a Logitech quickcam "messenger" though it seems to be coming up as "express" in the lsusb output as below.

I have a similar problem with my sweex webcam, although I don't have windows to check if it works OK there... I had just assumed the device was only designed for outdoor use or something. My webcam uses the spca5xx driver too. A little while ago I wrote up about getting it working here.

It looks like there is a recent release of the driver. I'll try to get it working and write up my experience with it soon.
