hi!! I've have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and tried to use the buil-in webcam, but it doesn't work. I didn't work with Ubuntu 10.04 either, but I thought that after installing this version, I could use it... but still, it doesn't work.
Could it be that I need a special driver?
I'm using a Toshiba Aspire 5734Z Laptop.

It's a uvc webcam so it needs the uvc driver. I would have expected installing guvcview from the repos to pull them in. Of course, it could be some oddball that isn't supported in Linux.
I googled around a bit and didn't find anything helpful for that model of laptop. The best I found was this. It's a longshot, but you could try opening the package manager and searching for uvc. It might turn up something (though I'm not optimistic).
If the device /dev/video0 is present then a driver should already be installed. According to the list on the UVC driver page, the device (0402:9665) is listed among supported webcams, so it should work.
cruzdelsur: Could you check, if /dev/video0 exists?

Yeah, that was my previous thread. I wanted to delete it, but I couldn't. It used to work when I have Windows and then with Ubuntu 10.04 for like a year, and then it stopped working. Some people recommended me to upgrade to the new version, since the older was not supported any longer... so I waited until I manage to do it. And now I got it, but it still doesn't work.

The main thing you should be figuring out is whether it is a software (driver) problem or a hardware problem (faulty hardware). You said it worked for a while, then stopped. Could you try to get it working with a system that worked before? I.e. test it with a Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Does it work in any other linux distro (live CD)?
There's not much you can do with faulty hardware except replace it.
Well, well... the webcam worked with Fedora!!! So strange!!! And I don't have black screen issues with it... Maybe I'll install it, but I'm so used to ubuntu
