WD 2TB ext usb drive: Ubuntu 10.04 chkdsk equivalent with no loss of files posible?

Would anyone know the equivalent of chkdsk for Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop? I

have a Western Digital 2TB ext hdd that I want to check for errors.

Will I lose any data if the errors are found and then fixed?? Maybe

better to just get a report of errors found first! Thank you.

Usually the Gnome Partition Editor is available to use on the live CD or it can be installed via the Ubuntu Software Center.
This program will check your disk for errors, and fix them if they are found. Fixing the errors could cause loss of data, however it has never happened to me and I've used it to fix errors about 10 times now on about 4 different hard drives of different models.

Hello everyone: here is the "mount" output re the WD Elements ext usb hdd:

/dev/sdb1 on /media/Elements type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions)

Does anyone know how I can use the "lsof" command to find out which file is being accessed on this hdd ??

Thank you all! -gustav521
