Wavy Console Text on Shutdown

I'm trying to set up Linux on a friend's new computer. Specs:

Dell Poweredge 400SC
Pentium 4-3.2ghz
40GB Maxtor Hard Drive
Plextor PX-712A DVD burner
PNY nVidia Quadro4 380 XGL video card
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1
Dell 2001FP LCD

On my friend's request, Slackware 10 is being installed. I got X up and running, but here's the problem. When I shutdown, after X is running, and I see the lines of text that indicate that services are being stopped and so on, the text appears wavy-like. This does not occur when I boot up the computer, however. Dunno what's causing this.

What I have done so far? I downloaded and installed the latest nVidia Linux drivers (1.0-6106). I edited the xorg.conf file as instructed by the README file. I use AGPGART instead of nVidia's AGP support (plus adding the parameter "agp_try_unsupported=1" in the rc.modules file). inittab is set up to start X on bootup. There are three ports on the Quadro4 380 XGL: VGA, DVI, and TV-out. The Dell 2001FP LCD is connected via DVI. Lilo is not configured to use a framebuffer console, just the standard 80x25. Furthermore, prior to installing the nVidia drivers, when I had recompiled the kernel, I did not compile rivafb (statically or as a module, because the nVidia driver doesn't like it, I understand).

Edit: forgot to mention, running X at 1600x1200@24bpp.
