Wanting my Brother Printer to connect with WiFi

Hope this is the proper forum. Have a Brother HL-L2360DW printer which works well when connected with a cable but really would like to put the printer into another area of the home and run it via WiFi.

My OS is Linux Mint 20.1 using a modem and router. I downloaded and installed the instructions from the Brother website for the installation of the drivers with the installation kit and works well but as stated not sure how to connect everything up to run on WiFi so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to all in advance.

I would use the printer's control panel.
The instructions are in the manual.

I'm definitely not an expert, but the information in "Step 15" in the following might help:

I believe the instructions are for a Windows OS.

Perhaps first of all I need to setup a wireless network. Any thoughts on how to do that?

The physical control panel on the printer itself which is totally separate from any computer or os. I own the same printer although it is wired.

poncedeleon,

The wifi key for your router will be supplied by your internet provider (ISP).

This link shows how to set up your wifi network:
https://www.reallinuxuser.com/how-to...in-linux-mint/

Once you have the wifi network activated, follow these instructions:
https://brotherprinters.co/brother-hl-l2360dw-setup

Thank you. The first link on how to set up the wifi network,,,,opening the network icon only shows a wired connection and no wireless connections even though there are 3 available in my home. My laptop running the same OS as this desktop picks up on these connections.

I am in the process of setting up a wifi through the network connection settings.

It is also possible to setup the printer using its built in web configuration tool. The network section includes the password. The printer needs to be wired but once configured you can unplug and it will switch to wireless.

I tried a couple of times using the printers control panel to setup WiFi but I receive the cannot locate the WLAN and it does give me solutions to rectify this I find myself getting deeper into a black hole.

I rebooted the OS and the network connection icon on the bottom left is still not picking up on my WiFi's in the home and tried to Add a network connection but unable to put the correct data in it and it won't allow me to save.

I would move the printer near the router which might be easier since the signal will be the strongest.

I'm confused as to what rebooting the os is referencing?

The printer connects to your router's wifi

michaelk I did move it immediately a couple of feet from the router and still no WLAN. I am thinking perhaps I should do a complete reset of the printer. What do you think? I am not aware of how to do that. On the latest,,my wife told me she uses her Apple iPad, to print things over WiFi. She just informed me of that.

Why I rebooted? Something to try.

The printer basically has two wireless modes, connected to your router's network, wifi direct where a device connects directly the printer. There is also ad-hoc but I don't think it is relevant here.

As far as your wife's iPad, the printer does have AirPrint capability and it is possible to have both a wired connection and wifi direct modes work at the same time. Since your printer is not associated i.e. connected to your Router's wifi it will default to wired.

I'm not sure you understand how wireless works. Basically all devices connect to your router. To print, the data is sent from your computer to the router then to printer. The printer should see the router's SSID (wireless broadcast name) unless you have it hidden. Otherwise might be something wrong with the printer.

As posted earlier you can setup wireless with the printer plugged in by going to its web configuration setup. You can find its IP address by printing the network configuration report from the printer's control panel.

Press the arrows to select the Machine Info. option, and then press OK.
Press the arrows to select Print NetSetting.
Press OK.

Ok I messed up! At 70 years of age I am starting to lose some of my marbles. The reason I could not set up a WiFi connection on my computer is due to the WiFi adapter not being plugged in on my usb port!! Searching for an hour for it I located it in a plastic bag with a dozen of my flash drives. Upon plugging the adapter in there was instant WiFi connection.

Your second instruction took me to a very well documented webpage with pictures and I simply followed along and am now happy to say I have not only a working WiFi connection but the printer is now working very well.

Thank you!

Thank you michaelk for your input. You are correct. I did not understand how wireless works but I do now thanks to you.
