Hi,
To properly check whether your modem is installed do setserial
on them.
like setserial /dev/ttyS0
see what irq it takes and make sure that it is free!

Try unplugging the phone line reboot the computer & opening kppp type in your username & password. Just before you click connect plug the phone line in & see if this works. I had a US Robotics 56k internal PCI modem that came with RPM drivers but if booted up with the line plugged in then modem was busy but if I did like I stated earlier then it would connect but when I disconnected it would kill the phone line no dail tone. Do a search of the forums for a past thread of mine "modem won't release phone line" I believe it was. Anyways I pulled that peice of crap out and am currently debating on which external modem to buy. Also this was a dual-boot box WIN98SE, RedHat 7.2 & the modem screwed up under both OSes so I feel this was a hardware problem but still it is annoying.

Good luck
