Vote for *best* sound card with Linux
I have an Creative SB Live! 16 sound card that's giving me fits.
I'm going to try and figure out the problem if it takes me the rest of my life. In the meantime, were I ever to purchase a new soundcard to use with my Slackware 9.1 installation, which sound card do is the best? To be the "best" the card should offer all the best sound features but be absolutely Linux friendly. A manufacturer that supported its card for Linux woudl be ahead of the game in my book. mj |

I use a card with the Yamaha Corporation YMF-754 chip on it. A hoontech.com's SoundTrack i-Phone Digital XG
Works fine. |
I was extremley happy with my Creative Sound Blaster Live! D.E. 5.1 which ran wery well under the native emu10k1 driver

I have had the following sound cards in my time using linux
Turtle Beach Montego II (aureal vortex2 chipset) - worked alright with Aureal driver from sourceforge Sound Blaster Live! 256 - Worked with the native emu10k1 driver just fine Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 - Works like a charm with the same native emu10k1 driver Turtle Beach Santa Cruz DSP - Works great with the native cirrus logic (sound fusion) driver |
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Gamer works awesome right out of the install from slackware, red hat, and mandrake (in my experience) never had a problem with it.

Hearing about so many good experiences with Creative makes me even more positive that I'm screwing something up. I need to figure out how to troubleshoot the problem properly.
Could it be a hardware conflict with the sound on the mobo? In the meantime, I'll go back and check that I have the emu10k1 driver. mj |
