volume too loud

i am running fc2 & using the motherboard's onboard sound.

the volume is way too loud, regardless of the speakers or headphones... i have all volume settings on the lowest i can without being off, & the sound is really loud. & if i even turn it up the littlest bit, it gets all distorted...

is there a way i can change this??

thanks,
andrew

try a command like
'alsamixer'
or
'aumix'
and bump the master and pcm levels down to about 80

i have master & pcm set to 0 with alsamixer & it's still pretty loud... is there anything else to try

Have you tried aumix? If you are using kde, try kmix.

in aumix, they are set to the lowest setting as well...

You sure 0 isn't 100%, and thus down to 80 is only 20%? I've noticed a bunch of sound equipment states volume in negative values, with nearer 0 being louder.

yeah, if i move it up, it gets really really loud & distorted
