Unhappy video problem

I currently am running a dual boot - xp and red hat 8. xp runs fine, but after the initial linux boot the redhat gui won't come up. The following is the error message:
"(EE)Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error: no screens found."
then it kicks me back to the text prompt. My video card is an onboard Intel 82845GL, I think, and I've had the same problem with two monitors so I think the video card is the problem. I tried the terminal command "linux 3 vga=789" and that didn't do anything. Any suggestions are very appreciated.

P.S. The monitor did work initially when I booted RH for the first time, but the resolution was 640x480 and the picture was "messed up" - icons disappearing, windows not disappearing entirely, etc. thanks.

I've read that Both RedHat 8 and Mandrake 9 don't properly detect the onboard Intel 845. Is there a linux-compatible driver I could download to fix this so I can run X? I have the windows drivers on cd, but I don't know of a way to have Linux read them.

Try configuring X again using one of the standard drivers like vesa or svga.
Don't set the resolution too high until you get something working. Try 800x600 @ 16 bit for starters. This shouldn't stress anything. You can then start gradually debugging the XF86Config-4 file (/etc/X11).
Cheers

The resolution you suggest is too high. it does not go over 320*200 in 8 bits.

I have some problems with Red hat 8.0 SIS 620 driver or The Monitor, some parts of the screen don't refresh after maximising o minimising a window or moving them, I guess may be the refresh rate of the monitor. If someone can help me, please tel me.
