Video of Red Hat enterprise 4 WS on DELL inspiron 6400
Hi all,

I got a Dell Inspiron 6400. I have installed a Red Hat Linux Enterprise WS 3 on it. Can have 1024x768 resolution. But I would like to have 1280x800, which is the maximum resolution that in Windows XP can get.

The monitor type is Dell E177FPm.
The chipset is Intel® 945GM.
Graphic Card should be Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950™

The moniter is not there in the Applications>> System Settings >> Display >> Hardware, so I choose Generic LCD Display >> LCD Panel 1280x800.

The graphic card I use VESA.

How can I let my Linux can have the same resolution as what I can get from Windows XP?

I will wait online, any advice is deeply appreciated!!!

you'll need 915resolution package and another driver module loaded in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, i915 or i810.

check and check out the home-made section.
Read about yum and apt.
The you can easy get those files.

and on the intel site

I will proceed to try the 915resolution package. Luckily I have got that Intel driver.

I think Red Hat Enterprise 4 has i810 and i915 listed in the Graphic card list. So it means I no need to deal with that tar.gz file?

I tried that tar.gz driver file, but it is written for Suse seems. I encountered error when with RH enterprise Linux 4.

Is the 915resolution enough for my case?

yes it just overrides the video bios settings for the 1280x800 thing.
the i915 is included in rhel 4 ws.

hi thanks
I installed the 915resolution package.

After run, it said it has detected 945GM. Then it listed many modes, I modified one of the resolution 1280x1024 into 1280x800. However, when I start x, it fails again, saying can not find device.

Does that mean i810 or i915 did not include 945GM?

Thanks so much for your help.
