video card upgrade

i'm currently using the integrated 6100 nvidia graphics on my MB.
I'm using the standard nvidia drivers installed through yast (suse 10.2)
I will soon be upgrading to a PCI-E video card.
Will I be able to just install the card and have it work with the current drivers ?? (the new card will def be nvidia based)

Also, if anyone could let me know what nvidia chips have good compatibility with linux ??? (I've heard some horror stories when using 8800 series cards)

thanks

I use an Nvidia 7300GT pcie.
This card works out of the box for the following distros
Gentoo (with/without Compiz)
Sabayon (with/without Compiz)
Suse 10.3 (with/without Compiz)
Ubuntu 7.1(Compiz not tried)
Dyne-Bolic Black screen have not tried further.
Knoppix ok if used with with fb boot prompt

Hope this is of help.

thanks for the tip.

The only thing i'm wondering is should I remove the current drivers and/or change xorg.conf to use the "nv" driver before I phisically install the new card ?? or just throw it in my machine and hope for the best ??

I know Linux can be picky about the way it handles video hardware.

thanks

Your current drivers should still work.
You might want to change to the nvidia-drivers rather than use the legacy nv drivers though.
I would get xorg up and running correctly before changing over the drivers.
Here is a very good guide
X Server Configuration HOWTO
