I plan to install Linux on a machine with below configuration
Pentium® 4 Processor at 2.40GHz with 533MHz
Video Card: 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 MX™ Graphics Card with TV-Out and DVI 64NV420
Hard Drive: 40GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
I couldnt find the above Graphic Card in the Hardware Compatibilty list on Red Hat Linux site. Do I have any options to make it work with the above configuration. Interest is not to run 3D graphics or any animations but finally to get oracle 9i to be installed on this machine. So if X-Windows works fine in 2D with a standard resolution that's all is required.
I would appreciate if anyone can throw some light on the above question.
# Configuring X Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO - video cards The Linux XFree86 HOWTO
Common X configuring tools:
Debian - dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
Mandrake - XFdrake
Redhat 7.3 down - the setup utility leads to several config tools
Redhat 7.3 up - redhat-config-xfree86
You may have these tools:
XF86Setup
XFree86 -configure
Xconfigurator
xf86cfg
xf86config
xconf ATI Linux drivers
If you need the nVidia driver, you want the Linux IA32 driver
Thanks for the quick response. From the HCL list you send me I could see that Geforce 4 is supported but not Geforce 4 MX.
I think by "Generic" you meant Geforce 4?. Please correct me if I'm wrong?. And this means I will be able to use any Linux X windows ( Any flavor ) only if I opt of a different Graphics Card other than the one existing?. Please let me know..
you will not have a problem with any nvidia card...they have generic drivers, and also nvidia supplies drivers for you can add the 3d capabilites as the generic drivers do not have 3daccel.
The nvidia linux drivers are "unified" (as are the windose drivers), meaning that they support almost every nvidia card you can buy - they even support the geforce2 go chip in my laptop.
My server has a geforce4 mx440 in it with the latest nvidia driver, and it works fine, just have a good look at the readme file on the nvidia linux download page before you install.
Hi I'm new with computers and a bit confused with this how this forum works don't even know how to post one. but just would like to know about something. I'm installing Red Hat 7.2 (enigma) on to my computer with the videocard (GeForce4 mx 440) and couldn't find it in the xconfigurator and so I can't load the xwindows. Sorry I'm really new at computers and I really need help with this since our assignment requires an actual working Red Hat 7.2 OS in my computer
yup i've tried that before but the xwindows still doesn't start i've tried using a generic video card but there's an error message "error no screen found" or something like that
