Video accelerator wont kick in

Hardware video accelerator won't work properly. When I try to watch any video with any player, CPU usage goes straight to 100%. In xine I have disablet both sound and video driver and then CPU usage is below 50% with mpeg4 files, so I gues that means that mpeg4 decoding takes 50% of CPU time.

I always get the video card to kick in by logging in as root and changing video driver first to sdl, then vidix (what causes a pink bar to apper at the bottom of the screen and scrambles the whole video window) after that I change the video driver to vidixfd. Now I can loging as any user and watch video so that cpu usage always stays below 60% (with xine and with no postprosessing).

Does somebode have clues what is causing this? How can I fix it?

I have Fedora Core 5 with GeForce MMX and 1.3GHz duron

To be more precise, I have nVidia GeForce 4 MMX. I hear that FC5 have had problems with nVidia hardware. My FC5 Identifies the cart properly, but for some reason don't start using it properly (until I mess with xine settings). I could update my drivers with new nVidia drivers I suppose, but I was kind of hoping to find some simple workaround that would make the system to start using the card.

Also, when I have done the trick with xine I get a lot better performance in all applications that use a lot of graphics, like tvtime and such (so there is definitely something wrong within the system, not just with the xine)
