VIA VT8233 AC'97 audio driver problem with redhat 8.0

I just installed redhat 8.0 on my computer. during the setup redhat said it found my sound card and asked to play a test sound. the test sound didn't play. when i logged in after the reboot i tried to play a CD, and no sound came out. i than ran sndconfig (/usr/sbin/sndconfig) it said it found the onboard audio then it listed a bunch of errors as listed below.

│ │
│ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: │
│ init_module: No such device │
│ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: │
│ insmod │
│ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o │
│ failed │
│ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: │
│ insmod sound-slot-0 failed │

i then downloaded the drivers from VIA for redhat 8 and it came in a .gz file. when i unzipped it, i looked at the files and had no idea what to do with them.the directions didn't help ether. i was reading a website that said something about turning them into .rpm install files but that confused me . i am extremely new to linux and need some help with this problem. like i said it is a VIA Technologies VT8233 AC'97 Audio Controller build into a ASUS A7V8X motherboard. also if you find the drivers in a nice self-install package like drivers for windows please let me know

thank you

Same problem

I have the Gigabyte GA-7VAXP with the AC97 onboard sound, and I can't figure out how to get it to work either. I've seen stuff about recompiling the kernel with sound support, installing alsa, and loading kernel modules, but in every case I can't figure it out. There is lots of stuff out there on message boards and stuff, but none of it makes sense. It sucks being a newb.
BTW: I have redhat 8.0, as well.

did you just modprobe the card module? because unless soundcore is built into the kernel you could try probing in sound too.

just guessing though as i do not use RH.

If you really can't solve the problem inside RH there do exist some pre-built RPMs to install ALSA. See

http://freshrpms.net/docs/alsa/

Read this carefully - driver package has to match your kernel exactly. There are packages there for RH8 and RH9. Disclaimer: I haven't touched RH for years, much less had any experience of ALSA with RH. I'm just pointing out the existence of these things.
