VIA 82cxxx Sound

I have a via epia-m motherboard with the built in via sound card. I want it to output to the spdif/pcm stereo but can't for the life of me figure out which module does it, which parameters, and how...

It currently runs on analog out using the following modules: (selective lsmod follows):

via82cxxx_audio 22296 0
uart401 8036 0 [via82cxxx_audio]
ac97_codec 13160 0 [via82cxxx_audio]
sound 70132 0 [via82cxxx_audio uart401]
soundcore 6116 4 [via82cxxx_audio sound]

I tried installing the alsa drivers from freshrpms.net, but that gave a segfault and made my system unstable. I tried compiling them on my own, i always got an unresolved symbol "schedule_work"

this is really frustrating, can anybody help?

I'd love to use the default via82cxxx module if i can figure out how to make it output in spdif, but any solution is fine...

The only distros that support this pickest sound out of the box are MDK 9.1 and latest Lycoris.

For others, you comple alsa. To avoid seg-fault, run a graphica mixer in X. Then run xmms or alsa-mixer.

actually, rh9 supports the card out of the box with the via82cxxx module, but (as far as i can tell) not spdif.

As far as alsa, just modprobing the snd-via82xx module seg faults, so its not a mixer issue, i can't get the low level system running.
