vgaswitcheroo, Radeon 5650, dark screen

Hello,

I installed Arch (3.10.5-1-ARCH) on an HP Envy 14 a few weeks ago. I've been using the integrated Intel Chipset with xf86-video-intel, but I'd like to start using the ATI Radeon 5650 as well with xf86-video-ati.

My current setup: My system boots to the console. Radeon is blacklisted, so I modprobe it manually. I run
Code:
sudo echo DDIS > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switchitcheroo
The system hangs for a second and then my screen goes dark but the system is still working. I can get screen output back by echo DIGD to vgaswitcheroo/switch. My brightness keys don't help, and I've screwed around a bit in /sys/class/backlight but it hasn't helped.

Any suggestions? Logs and stuff below, let me know what else is helpful. Thanks!

Hi: asaltz

Welcome to Linux Questions.

One thing that might help is to install the AMD Catalyst Proprietary Display Driver.
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...eon_linux.aspx

After you download the driver you can change directory and run it as root with bash.
This is what I did when it was in my Downloads folder.

Code:
cd Downloads
Downloads# bash name of the AMD Catalyst driver.run
Or just simply double click on the dot run file and it should install.

Also; it looks like you have 2 graphics cards- Is that right?

I solved the problem by switching to different kernel. (btw, the proprietary ATI driver never works with vga_switcheroo)

Thanks for your help!

Your Welcome- Glad everything works now.

Sorry I forgot to mention that switching to a more current version of the kernel does help hardware issues--
That's a good link; thanks for posting it-

Have a good weekend!
