vertical lines after installing fglrx

Hi,

I seem to have hardware acceleration working on my laptop... but whenever I boot up or reboot the machine, there are vertical bars on the screen (multicolored). I don't get them once I've logged in... just during the boot process (actually, after the boot process but before the boot screen shows up).

Any ideas as to why this is happening?

This is stuff left over in the framebuffer and whathaveyou. You'll notice the colors will relate to the last screen displayed before you last logged out. Your system is working correctly.

Ok... strange. Shouldn't the buffer be flushed beforehand? I mean, when I reboot or shutdown, there are a lot of lines for quite a few seconds.

I agree - I suspect the exact response depends on the hardware. I'm only guessing about the framebuffer - could be from the video RAM. I have this with some hardware and not others. My laptop shows this on recover from suspend. My old PC used to display a partial and striped version of the old splashscreen for a second before displaying a new one. (Both SiS chipsets).

Looks like incomplete flushing or something. The new screen overwrites it properly and there doesn't seem to be any overhead. Certainly nothing to worry about - your card ain't gonna go bang or anything.

If you really want to understand it, you have to learn about how to build a modern video card...

Ok - good points. Thanks for taking the time.
