Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

USR Modem hangs up 1st time only

I've got a USRobotics 56k Hardware modem. When I first try to connect to my ISP, I open KPPP and hit connect. It initializes, dials, does it's connect stuff, and even seems to actually connect only to die immediately afterwards. I get a message: "ppp daemon died unexpectedly" and an exit code of 16 which is modem hung up. I get back to the KPPP window and hit connect again, and it works fine, every single time. It's fairly annoying as it doubles the time it takes to get online.

Any idea what the problem might be? It works fine in XP, no hang ups, so I don't imagine it's a hardware failure or problem, but perhaps a configuration issue. I can't understand though why it will only do it the first time.

Thanx in advance...

USR hangup

Hello TenEighty

This sounds like something I have also seen.

In my notes, I have that in /etc/ppp/pppscript a line needs to be edited
that file starts off with TIMEOUT 60 then there are several lines about ABORT
just above the line that is your IPS phone number which is something like "atdt5556645"
I added the line "" ATZ OK

that line fixed whatever was causing the problem.

Good Luck

I noticed in the KPPP log windows, after dialing, it expects "CONNECT" and that's what the modem returns. Then KPPP goes to start pppd, and almost immediately, the error window shows up stating the pppd daemon died unexpectedly returning error code 16.

So perhaps the problem lies in pppd configuration?

Are there any options in KPPP for executing pppd?

Do I need to configure pppd for use with KPPP?

I used pppd with slack 8 because I had hardware compatibility problems preventing me from using X, but I was using a connect script and in this case it seems that kppp takes care of the dialing in login so a different setup would be called for?
