using print server from D-Link 704p

Hey just wondering if anyone had any experience using the print server function of the D-Link 704p router. There is a program that needs to be downloaded for a windows box to work with it, but i have found noone that has any experience getting a linux box to use it. Any help or ideas are appreciated.

I use a SMC 7004WBR and no problems using it under linux.
Well not exactly "no problems". Some distros work better than others and some versions of a distro work better.

The print servers typically use unix portocals so you shouldn't have to much trouble...what have you tried so far...and what distro are you using

I am running slackware 8.1 . I believe the protocol used is lpr. I guess my question is, is how would i specify where the printer is at when i print?

thats right the protocol should be lpr. The IP for the print server should be listed in the docs that came with the router. If not, try using the ip of your router or if you are using dhcp the gateway assigned to you by the router. the printer queue should be "lp" without the quotes.

I also have the DLink DI-704P router w print server.
I use Linux mandrake 9.0, and have not been able to setup the
printer throught this router. I use the cups printing system, and have tried the CUPS web administration tool, Webmin and KUPS to try and set this up, but always get lpdadmin: .. failed:server-error-service-unavailable.
The ip of the router is 192.168.0.1
If any one has any ideas, your help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Alot

I can now print using my US Robotics router in Red Hat 8,

Anybody else having the same problem use:

redhat-config-printer

Choose Unix printer, set the server to your US Robotics IP address, queue to lp, choose your printer, hit apply

Worked right away

Thanks Again

I have a similar router/print server from Siemens and I am trying to use a "Unix Print Queue" in Red Hat 9.0. I have typed in the print server's IP address and the queue name is "lp" according to the Siemens documentation but I keep getting this error - "Remote Host did not accept the control file (32)" when I try a test print.

Any ideas why this isn't working?

Thanks!

P.S. I did post this in the hardware forum

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...437#post288437

but no one has replied to me yet. I hope no one gets ticked off that I am posting to this thread about this. I just want it to work!

I also have a similar problem. Same Set up and "nirvana" has, but a different error. When I try to set up, I can find the printserve, but it fails to create teh print queue because I can not put in the port (numerical) that it is using. I tried port: 9100 (I have a n HP printer) but this is not correct. I believe Ineed the port of the DI-704P printserver, but I cannot find it in the OEM specs or on DLinks pages.

Any thoughs on this problem would also be much appreciated.

Talking Setting up DI-704p for linux

I use debian linux as my distro., and here is what I did to make the server to work.

For debian users:
1. apt-get install cupsys
2. apt-get install gnome-cups-manager

For all users:
1. under gnome-cups-managner, make a new printer
2. choose a remote printer
3. under 'printer-type', choose Unix Printer (LPD)
4. Host: 192.168.0.1:55
5. Queue: lp

Thanks for the clue.
Mixing my different distro with my terrible typing, I came up with a printer that worked
Also, simplifying all this, I had already linked to this printer roundabout by smb: to an existing DI-704p Windows shared printer, so the lp queue was already in place.

For MDK 9.1 Bamboo:

1. CUPS WWW admin tool
2. Printer, Add Printer
3. Type: LPD/LPR host or Printer
4. Printer URI= lpd://192.168.0.1/lp .... [lpd://hostname/queue]

I forgot the port :55, but it worked anyways.
The rest was just picking the model and all that.

Again, thx:-)
