Using hard drive from busted machine

I was sent an x86 machine running Debian Sarge. In shipping, the machine was damaged and does not boot (hats off to you, UPS). If I'm lucky, the hard drive may still work. How do I install the drive into my current machine (running Debian Sarge) so that I recover data? After the data is recovered, I'll format the drive and put it in a new machine.

This is what I think I have to do:
1. Install the drive (duh?)
2. Figure out what my main drive is mounted as (/dev/hdx): dmesg | grep hd?
3. mount the other drive mount -t ext3 /dev/hdc1 /mnt/hdc1

Is that close?

Thank you in advance!

James

Jumpers set correctly, of course.

You mean the device name? hda = primary master; hdb = primary slave; hdc = secondary master; hdd = secondary slave. You can also confirm with "fdisk -l" or "cfdisk -Ps".

Testing the drive with the manufacturer's disk tools would probably be a good idea.
