users can't hear sound

Hey, I finally switched from Redhat to gentoo and I love it.

I have a configuration problem, though, with the sound. I have a c-media 8738 based onboard card so I compiled the cmpci driver as a module, modprobed it, etc... but I don't think that the drivers are the problem.

root can use sound perfectly it is when i log in as a user (uid 500) that I have issues. XMMS will not play and gives me an error message.

My guess is some permissions on the device or something. Am I anywhere near the problem or it's solution?

Thanks for the help, and i'll probably be back here with questions since this is my weening from pre-packaged config tools ;->

add the user to the correct group - most likely 'audio'

the permissions should be setup that adding oneself to the group is enough -remember one has to logout for group changes to take effect

Ah, thanks... that was simple, wasn't it? This is going to be an interesting ride.
