Use nvidia dGPU without reboot/logout&login

Hello everybody!

I have a question about laptops with an Intel and a Nvidia GPU. (e.g. the MSI PS63) [on Ubuntu 19.04]
Is it possible to use the Nvidia GPU for only some applications?
I think this should work with DRI Prime (Nvidia Prime). Am I right? If I launch an application with it (or the rightclick -> launch using dedicated graphics card option from Gnome) it enables the Nvidia dGPU and after closing this applications the Nvidia card is automaticly disabled (for a longer batterylife)? Do I have to reboot my computer or to logout & login?
How about external screens? Do they work (when they are connected to the Nvidia card)?

Thank you very much!
