USB working/not lspci & dmesg
Before you read - i dont actually expect anyone to fix this for me just a professional/experienced opinion.
Recently i bought all the parts for a new computer - athlon xp 2800, 256 mb pc3200 ram & Epox EP-8K9A7i. I installed win xp home & mandrake 10. Both my external usb harddrive and pen drive were recognised and icons appeared on the desktop. With the external harddrive the icon will stay on the desktop even if its plugged out. As with my old installation mandrake got a bit confused & i ended up with two icons for the same thing - mnt/removable & mnt/removable2. as long as the HD was plugged in the files would appear in one folder. The after about a day both folders came up blank when everthing was plugged in and the pen drive didnt appear as an icon either. After tearing my hair out for two days and reinstalling to no avail i reset the CMOS and found everything working again. Long story short its not working again and in the last two days ive tried reinstalling both winXP & mandrake several times resetting the CMOS, setting bios to default(SAFER) settings, setting bios to optimised settings - justabout everthing i could think of. I did not mess with any of the usb settings in the bios, not that there are many. All i did was bump the fsb to 333mhz for th xp2800. Resetting the cmos sets the fsb at 100mhz Incedentally the last time i reset the cmos it killed win xp which wouldnt boot except in safe mode. Alternatively different time i re/installed win xp it has claimed that there was a usb device but couldnt recognize what it was, worked with the HD, not recognized anything or claimed that files werent where i specified when i tried to copy from external HD to windows. Basically id like someone to read lspci and dmesg results below and tell me if theres any reason why i shouldnt go and buy a new motherboard. Thanks lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.
