USB Webcam/TV Card interference with flash
I just purchased a Logitech USB webcam and installed it on my Mandriva workstation. To get it working, I installed the gspca driver.
This was straightforward and the webcam seems to work OK locally. However, the firefox flash 9 plugin doesn't see the cam. This box also has a KWorld PCI 120 TV card which I plugged into it a few months ago, and which I don't have fully working (tuner isn't properly detected...I think I know what to do but haven't taken the time to alter the driver to do it). On startup, the TV card is being identified as /dev/video0, and the cam is being identified as /dev/video1. This is requiring me to specify the video device when I start cam software, because all the cam software seems to be perfectly happy to identify the TV card as a device that software can control. I can do this; no biggie. However with the Flash 9 plugin used by firefox and konqueror, there is a significant problem. Basically, the Flash plugin is identifying the TV card as a cam, and not recognizing the cam at all. This, of course, doesn't work. Also, in Kopete, there appears to be a similar problem; the Yahoo Messenger plugin sees the TV card but not the cam. There is a drop-down list where I should be able to choose my device but only the TV card is present. I suppose that some video config file someplace isn't being properly populated, but I have no idea what or where that config file is. Does anyone here know what I need to do to have the cam recognized in these programs? I bought the cam so I could video chat with my daughter who is on the other side of the continent; video chatting of necessity involves being able to forward the video stream. |
followup:
The problem seems to have corrected itself. I took a look in /dev, and found that /dev/video0 and /dev/video1 were both symlinks into entries in /dev/v4l/. There also was another symlink called /dev/video which pointed to the same place as /dev/video0. I changed that link to point to the same place as /dev/video1 and tried flash. Flash didn't work, and Kopete didn't work. I then went away for awhile and did other things. Came back, tried again. This time both Flash and Kopete worked. So it's working now. Yay. Why? No idea. I hate it when that happens. |
