First off, let me say that you guys have been awesome in bringing a total newb around. I have completely gotten rid of windows on both my desktop and my laptop, and there is no looking back....


...except, I just remembered my Creative Live Ultra webcam today. I wanted to chat with the gf, but I have no idea how to set this thing up on ubuntu (feisty). Far as I can tell, Creative doesn't provide any linux drivers...what does a person do in this situation? Can anyone give me a starting point?

You mean you couldn't find your webcam listed? If other manufacturers are any guide there could be multiple versions of 'Creative Live Ultra' webcam. To get a positive ID you need to plug it in and check the output of 'lsusb' for its product code - something like

Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:08d9 Logitech, Inc.

Also, unplug the cam, plug it back in and post the last few lines of the output of the 'dmesg' command, where the system reports a new USB device being added.

from lsusb:
Bus 004 Device 006: ID 041e:403c Creative Technology, Ltd WebCam Live! Ultra

from dmesg:
[209217.804000] usb 4-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[209217.944000] usb 4-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
