USB thumb or hard drive fails to mount after use on Windows

You must properly eject any USB (flash or hard) drive before unplugging it on Windows. If windows won't eject it and keeps insisting that it is in use, then you must shut down Windows before unplugging the drive. Failure to do this leaves the drive in an unstable state and Linux will refuse to mount it.

The same applies when opening it again on Windows and the same applies on Linux -- you must ensure that all information is written to the drive before removing it.

Not necessarily. Anyway, what's your question?
