USB sticks and drives not detected by bios

To start with I know this is not a linux problem, it is purely hardware.

After the computer has been on for a while and then restarted bios does not detect in POST the usb sticks that it is supposed to use to boot from. This is obviously a problem as bios can't use something it can't see to boot from.

I'm wanting to know if anyone else has had a problem like this with my hardware? I suspect it is the Asus M4A78LT-M LE that has a usb detection problem, since I've tried plugging the same sticks in to another pc and they do not have the same issue on that pc.

This is kind of a shot in the dark, and may not help with your problem at all, but I have an Asus EEE 1008HA that doesn't properly identify bootable USB sticks as USB devices. Rather, you have to select them under the IDE devices portion of the BIOS. Anyway, this might help.

except they do get detected properly when ever it's powered up first, just after a while of being on, whenever I restart it fails to detect them.

This is likely just a case of poor BIOS code. Try to update the BIOS if possible.

Another thing to try is using a powered hub (or even different sockets on the motherboard). Often lack of USB recognition is due to an underpowered port.

Always do a cold boot and see if it also fails. Do a full shutdown for 20 minutes with power plug out. Or shutdown and pull power plug and press power button a few times.

That is the only way to help assure a clean cold boot.
