usb stick automount
Hi ..
I can mount a USB memory stick as a super user (su) in /etc/fstab :
{mkdir /mnt/USB}
{vim fstab }
and i add :
{/dev/sda1 /mnt/USB vfat rw,user,noauto 0 0}
Having done this i can restart the computer ,connect the USB and it works without the need to mount it again.( Before i was mounting all the time using {mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/USB} ...)
However when i disconnect the USB without {umount /mnt/USB} i cannot mount it again unless i restart the PC again. (i tried mount as before and that was not working either)
So my question : Is there a way to plug and unplug the USB without having to {umount} every time?
Thanks in advance

If you're using the latest version of any major distro out there, every USB device should automount. What distro are you using? What version?

I had problems with automounting a USB stick with FC3, kernel 2.6.9 - sometimes it worked and sometimes (mostly) it didn't.
I recently upgraded to kernel 2.6.12 and since that time the USB stick has had no problems - not a single failure to automount.

I've never tried recompiling a kernel myself, but here are some instructions.
