usb speakers in mandrake 10
 

Hey, I've just installed mandrake 10 and use microsoft digital sound system 80 as my speakers, which are usb. Anyways I can't seem to get them working right. They won't play anything on ut2004 or any other game, but they'll play mp3's in some media players. audio cd's will not work at all (might be related to something elses?) In Harddrake they are listed under unknown devices and have no module. Can anyone help my out? Do I need a driver or need to configure linux's driver or what?

Umm.. i have no idea. Microsoft usb speakers... ehh. That is quite a combo. Can I ask.. why? No sound card input?

lol, I know. But they are very nice speakers. I lost the cord for the sound card input so I have to use usb.

Linux seems to be recognizing it, but how do I set it up in mandrake?

The last time I installed mandrake (9.2) I had to mess around with arts or something, but I cant find it now.

Have you tried alsaconf? That might detect it automatically and make it useable to all devices.

only my sound blaster and my legacy cards show up on alsaconf.

What is the output of 'cat /proc/asound/cards' ?

Maybe totem can play audio CD's. KsCD won't work because it relies on the cd-rom drive doing the digital/analog conversion and then just sending the analog signal via an (on modern systems often not installed) analog cable to the soundcard. Obviously you need digital audio extraction (getting the digital data using the IDE interface of your drive) to send digital audio to the USB speakers. Good luck!

It still will not play an audio cd in totem, says it has a plugin to do so and I should check if a disc is in the drive and if it is configured corectly.

What gets me is that my speakers are recognized will play mp3's but no sound will come out on games like chromium and ut2004, and I think kde is supposed to make sounds when it starts up or shuts down but it don't do that either, strange.

oh, got it to play cd's in totem, it was trying to play it on the wrong drive, but the kscd dont work, thanks.

Could someone just tell me where I could find the configuration files?

It seems everything works except in SDL_apps whatever that is. Anyone know how to configure the sound for SDL_Apps?

I ran ut2004 in a console and this is what it gave me this:
open /dev/dsp no such file or directory

Ok, I've been searching the net for what seems an eternity and I've tried this out:

modprobe snd-pcm-oss

And it worked.

Now my question is how do I set this to start automatically on boot in mandrake 10?
