USB Serial Port

I have dual boot laptop that I am running XP home and CentOS 4. I use this laptop to tune the EFI system of my truck. The laptop is a HP1175 so it doesn't have a serial port. When using the adapter I get the dreaded blue sceen and it locks up.

If I can get the adapter to load in linux I'll install wine and see if I can run the program this way.

Does anyone have any sugestions?

Not quite the politically correct answer for this forum. I would first try and pin point the causes of the blue screen in XP, it could potentially be faulty hardware in which case you might get the same problem under linux.

Nope I have tried 3 different USB to serial ports and 2 different manufactures. Its a problem with my windows driver.

I was wanting to know if anyone had used a USB to serial port before. I I havn't tried yet. I am getting ready to plug it in and boot up. I have never used a USB device in linux and was just wondering,

I think that it might work.

I did a dmesg and it looked like it had loaded the driver. I'm going to install wine now and see what happens

I was digging around in a mountain of spare parts today and just for laughs decided to reconnect my U.S. Robotics external modem. I have a toshiba with XPpro, Knoppix 3.7 and 3.9 on the hd. I used a Radio Shack usb to serial cable to connect the modem to the laptop. Both Knoppix versions worked straight out of the box. With Windows of course I had to install drivers but then it worked like a charm.

Yea, I should have posted back, I was able to make the USB to serial to work and not get a blue screen and the computer would lock up. The only problem I have now is with wine. Its not working with my windows software. If I get it to work I'll let you guys know.
