USB Scanner

Hi! This is my very first post here after lurking for a little while (well actually it's my second, I posted to the general forum too.)

I own a Canon N1220OU USB scanner that is unrecognized by the version of XSane included with RedHat 8.0. I spent the better part of a day researching the problem and the best info I found was a recommendation that I use a version of/plugin for Sane written for Plustek hardware. The package I found at http://www.gjaeger.de/scanner/plustek.html was completely useless to me despite hours with the documentation. No ./configure anywhere in the package, despite what the documentation said.

Does anyone have any experience with this hardware? Do I have to install Sane (rather than XSane)? Do I have to remove XSane? What the heck is this Plustek package supposed to do, anyway? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Any and all assistance is appreciated!

if you have xsane you should already have sane, but to install the drivers from the above site you'll need to get the sane-backend source and put the drivers into the sane-backend directory and then run configure and make
